Tonsabab currently is a one-woman-operation. Born and raised in The Netherlands, Pleun made her first quilt top from a book: “How to make an Amish Quilt’. It was hand cut (regular scissors), and then hand sewn. Her mom taught her how to sandwich and then quilt it by hand and (thankfully) helped finishing it.
From the Netherlands Pleun and her husband moved to the tropics (where there really is no need for quilts), and later returned to her husband’s home country: Canada. This is when she really got into quilting. The making of quilt tops got her through the Covid period where isolation was the norm and we were not allowed to visit.
An ad for a Yuki midarm on a local buy and sell page answered the question on how to get all those tops quilted. Early 2021, Pleun started to learn Free Motion Quilting with the help of the Free Motion Challenges by Angela Walters. And absolutely loving it! Upgrading to an HQ Avante with Pro-Stitcher. Computerized quilting opened up a whole new world and she loves everything about it. The fact that the quilting is computerized, means that the quilting is evenly spaced over the whole quilt using a digital pattern. The look and feel of the quilts is wonderful, and to be able to do this for others is a bonus.
She currently divides her time between two places: Calgary and Brooks (2 hours east of Calgary). Her longarm machine lives in Calgary in the Beltline in a smoke and pet free apartment.
All the quilts you see on this websites are made by Pleun. She uses different patterns, styles and colors. She loves working with ‘scraps’: leftover fabrics from projects, bits and pieces that she receives from her quilting friends, as well as used clothing, shirts, sheets etc. If you’d like to know more about them, click here.
